How to Break the Shiny Object Cycle
Have you ever found yourself distracted by the latest tool, project, or trend, only to realise it led you nowhere?
As entrepreneurs, we're naturally drawn to innovation and novelty, but jumping from one shiny object to the next can be detrimental to our business success.
In our recent Global Superstars mastermind, we explored how to break free from this cycle and stay focused on what truly matters.

1. Uncover the Root Cause
What's driving your attraction to shiny objects?
It's rarely just boredom. Could it be fear of success or feelings of unworthiness?
Journaling can help you dig deeper.
Ask yourself, "Why do I feel the need to pursue shiny objects? Where does this stem from?"
Allow yourself to explore these questions and uncover the real reasons.
2. Address Self-Punishment
Once you've identified the underlying cause, consider if it's rooted in self-punishment.
Are you letting an inner critic dictate your actions?
Acknowledge this inner voice and thank it for the role it played until now because, after all, it got you where you are today.
But then shift your focus to your inner cheerleader.
Simply claiming to yourself that from now on you'll choose for your thoughts, feelings, and actions to be rooted in unconditional self-love can begin to move mountains.
3. Identify the Real Need
Reflect on what need you're fulfilling by chasing the next big thing.
Is it rest, connection, or something else?
Pause and ask yourself, "What's the need driving my focus elsewhere?"
Once identified, prioritise satisfying this need before returning to your tasks.
You can also do this retrospectively by reflecting on past experiences and learning from them.
Remember, it's a process, so be kind to yourself.
4. Evaluate New Ideas
From our recent project management workshop, we learnt to ask five key questions when a new idea arises:
What: Define the project, its scope, timeline, and budget.
Why: Understand the benefits for you and your business.
Who: Identify collaborators needed to make it happen.
Fit: Ensure it aligns with your business goals and ask whether 'now' is the right time.
Risks and Issues: Anticipate challenges and plan responses.
Remember, it's not just about what we do, but how we do it.
If something no longer brings joy or results, change may be needed. However, pursue changes mindfully to avoid distractions.
By staying focused and intentional, we can achieve our goals without falling for every shiny object.
